Dangers of obesity 'should be taught in schools' Article date: 2008-11-28 22:41:59

The incidence of obesity should be tackled through education in schools, it has been claimed.

According to Tam Fry, spokesperson for the National Obesity Forum, girls at secondary schools in particular could benefit from information about the necessity of keeping at a healthy weight.

He believes that many youngsters fail to realise how much more of an effort it becomes to fight the flab as they advance in years.

"As you grow older you lose some of the hormones which are responsible for keeping you in trim, so you have to pay double attention to how much you exercise," he said.

"Women really do have to eat properly and exercise properly in order to maintain a sensible weight."

Mr Fry's comments come soon after the publication of research from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut which showed women who are overweight have a greater chance of losing their jobs, running into financial difficulty and being subjected to crime.

The findings, which appear in the journal Preventative Medicine, suggest obese people experience more "stressful life events" than those of a healthier weight.ADNFCR-438-ID-18903804-ADNFCR
